Landscape photography is my passion. I think that I might have provided enough evidence of that. I go out for landscape photos during all sorts of conditions which most people would probably stay inside for. Winter landscape photography adds another level of challenge. How do I keep my hands warm and still operate my camera? Today, I’m pulling back the curtain and letting you see just how I do it.
It’s a conundrum. How do I sit out in the cold and ice long enough to get my photo while still having the ability to operate the dials and tiny buttons on my camera? Regular gloves will keep my hands warm but don’t let me operate the camera while using no gloves quickly numbs my hands and won’t let me operate the camera either.
I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out. Hand warmers don’t work so well without gloves. I even found some gloves specifically for photographers which pull back the thumb and the index finger to allow for warmth and camera operation. The problem is that they didn’t have my size. The gloves were too big for my hands.
Then someone told me about the option I currently use. I found some gloves with partial fingers and some socks which I had thumb-holes added to. Then I gave them a test. I wanted to make sure that they would work for my purposes.
While they don’t keep everything perfectly warm, this setup is the best thing I’ve found yet for keeping my hands warm out in the field. I get extra layers on my forearms which help keep things extra warm and I can still manipulate my camera buttons and dials. This is my current method for keeping my hands warm while taking winter landscape photos.
