Dragon Fire: Light and Shapes in the Sky

Edit Template

The skies light up.  Fire rains down from jets released far above.  Reds and oranges contrast against the blues of twilight.  The giant wyrm circles around for another round.  Every breath which escapes its mouth carries heat and death.  This is what I see and feel when I look at my newest landscape photo: a dragon attack and dragon fire.

No, this photo does not depict a real dragon attack.  Dragons are only myth.  They aren’t real.  Still, the image of dragon fire pervades though the sky and the reflection in the water below.  The left cloud even resembles a dragon head in certain ways.

I decided I wanted to expand my landscape photography locations so I selected one off of my to-do list.  This time, I selected the Tropic Reservoir.  I knew things are dry this season.  I expected the reservoir to be low having already witnessed how low Panguitch Lake is earlier this season.  However, I know if I don’t get a feel for a potential location, I’ll never know when or where to set up should the opportunity present.

Tropic Reservoir, popular with fishermen, is a rather small but long body of water encompassing much of the valley holding it.  It’s also some pretty country.  I could almost throw a rock across the lake, it’s that narrow.  Still, I’m glad I took the time to investigate it.  It reminds me of certain places I’ve been to in Idaho.

I tried several locations looking for the right shot.  Most of my initial ideas don’t pan out.  This happens a lot.  This particular photo shoot was no different.  I finally found something promising at the end and just before the sunset faded.  I wasn’t sure whether or not it would work, but tried anyways.  In the end, that last-minute attempt ended up being the best shot of the day.
