How to Know What Size Picture Frame You Need

When buying a new piece of wall art, usually, one must also consider buying a new picture frame for said art.  While there are versions of art which one may display unframed, this is not the norm.  Most wall art requires, or is at least enhanced and better protected, with a picture frame.  So, naturally, the question of choosing the right size of picture frame comes up.  Let’s discuss this point.

Determining the Necessary Picture Frame Size

Finding the answer to what size of picture frame you need is rather simple.  The picture frame must contain the wall art without gap.  This means that you will want to measure the outside dimensions of your chosen wall art so you may locate an exact fit.  A simple tape measure will suffice for this task.

For most relatively flat wall art, you needn’t worry about more than the length and the width.  The height is negligible at best.  When dealing with certain pieces of wall art, such as big canvases, then you might need to consider the depth/height as a shallow frame may not work.

That’s it!  Now you know what size of picture frame you need for your wall art.  The inner dimensions of the frame, that is.  It’s expressed in units of length x width x height in that order.  Make sure that you’re using the same units of measure when conveying your needed picture frame dimensions.  Otherwise, others won’t understand you.

A Few Notes

While measuring, you may find that you require a standard size of picture frame for you wall art.  If you want to know more about standard sized picture frames and what their dimensions are, then check out this article on the topic.  Anything outside of those standard sizes ranks as a custom set of dimensions requiring a custom frame.  Also, keep in mind that, for smaller artwork, you may choose to mat the art and thus bring it up to a standard sized picture frame if you so desire.
