APerhaps you’ve heard of Cedar Breaks National Monument.  Or, perhaps you’ve come to the area and just learned about it.  Ever wondered where it is?  It’s a natural question to ask when you don’t know.  So, today we’re discussing where Cedar Breaks National Monument is so that you can more easily find it for yourself.

The quick and dirty answer is that Cedar Breaks is located in Utah not far from Cedar City.  It’s up in the mountains at a surprisingly high elevation of over 10,00ft given much of the surrounding area.

The natural amphitheater which is Cedar Breaks National Monument is situated at the top of the Black Mountains in Southern Utah.  It is indeed located at about 10,500ft above sea level and, therefore, a high altitude spot.  It’s also part of the Dixie National Forest.

It is about 4 miles away from the ski resort town of Brian Head.  It’s 12.2 miles away from Cedar City as the crow flies.  Cedar City is the nearest city of any substantial size.  Also nearby are the towns of Hatch, Panguitch, and Panguitch Lake along with Mammoth Creek and Duck Creek villages.

Accessing Cedar Breaks

Now that you might have an idea of how to pinpoint Cedar Breaks National on a map, your next question is probably how you get there.  That’s easy.  There are a couple access points to use.  You can use Utah Highway 143 or 14 to access Utah Highway 148.  Highway 148 is the route through Cedar Breaks National Monument.

You can find an access to Utah Highway 14 in downtown Cedar City.  Also, if you come from a slightly different direction, you can find access to the 143 in downtown Panguitch.  Either route will work to take you to the 148 and Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Please keep in mind, if you plan on visiting during late fall, winter, or early spring, there’s a good chance you might run into road closures due to snow.  The north viewpoint remains open all year.  But the rest of the park isn’t guaranteed.  If the roads are unsafe, then you can’t access the monument without something like a snowmobile or a snowcat.
